Lady Havildar stages hunger strike before SP office over alleged harassment

A female havildar, who had filed a harassment complaint against two police officers, staged a hunger strike before the office of the superintendent of police (SP), Angul, on Wednesday. After filing the complaint against the two officers earlier this month, the havildar had also sent her resignation letter, but it has not been accepted yet, officials said. Demanding action against a reserve inspector and a force section officer, the lady havildar launched a hunger strike before the SP office in Angul this morning. Later, IGP (north central range) Satyabrata Bhoi invited her for a discussion, following which, the havildar withdrew her strike. Speaking to media persons, the IGP said that the reserve inspector has been transferred from Angul to Kalahandi. Further action will be taken after completion of the investigation, he said. ''During preliminary investigation, we found high-handedness of the inspector while sanctioning leave to the havildar. Accordingly, the transfer was made by the DGP on the recommendation of the SP,'' Bhoi said. The other grievances of the lady police officer will also be taken into consideration, the IGP said. Earlier, the lady havildar, working in Angul district, had alleged that two of her seniors subjected her to prolonged mental harassment. The havildar further alleged that she was denied leave and mistreated by the officers in front of junior staff. Following the allegation, Angul SP had ordered a probe by a team headed by a senior female DSP.
