German Journalist Detained in Syria Amid Tensions
The Syrian government has detained a German journalist, Eva Maria Michelmann, last seen in January. She was found with a Kurdish-Turkish colleague during a military operation in Raqqa. The Information Ministry suspects they might be illegal foreign fighters, initiating legal proceedings while calls for release continue.
The Syrian government confirmed on Thursday the detention of a missing German journalist, Eva Maria Michelmann, in Syria. Michelmann, aged 36, was seen for the last time on January 18 when she and her Kurdish-Turkish colleague were allegedly detained by Syrian forces during the Raqqa takeover amidst operations against the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), reported the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) earlier this week.
Syria's Information Ministry stated that both journalists, Michelmann and her colleague Ahmed Polad, were discovered in Raqqa in a building used as an SDF security headquarters. They reportedly lacked identification and claimed humanitarian work affiliations. However, inconsistencies in their story led to suspicions of them being foreign fighters in Syria illegally, prompting formal detention and legal proceedings.
The CPJ demands their release while Germany's Foreign Office confirmed contact with Michelmann under privacy constraints. After seizing Raqqa, the Syrian government's ceasefire and integration talks with SDF to incorporate them into the national army are gradually progressing amid ongoing challenges of post-war stabilization.
