The Allahabad High Court has delivered a crucial verdict in favor of Mohammad Chand, ordering the Uttar Pradesh government to compensate him with Rs 2 lakh. The court declared the authorities' seizure of Chand's vehicle in 2024 as 'illegal and arbitrary,' following unsubstantiated claims of beef transportation.
According to Justice Sandeep Jain, the vehicle was impounded under the suspicion of transporting five cows' beef, based on inadequate evidence. A veterinary assessment failed to conclusively identify the meat, and no verification from an authorized laboratory was presented, leaving the state's allegations unproven.
The court highlighted the economic hardship faced by Chand due to the prolonged seizure, emphasizing the state's responsibility in proving the claims. It ordered the immediate release of the vehicle and directed the state to recoup the compensation from the officials involved.
