South African Hindu Organization Advocates for Indian Representation in Textbooks
A prominent South African Hindu organization is urging the inclusion of Indian history and contributions in school curricula. The organization emphasizes the importance of acknowledging the struggles and achievements of Indians, particularly in economics, culture, and anti-apartheid efforts, to promote social cohesion and understanding across different races in South Africa.
A leading Hindu organization in South Africa has called upon authorities to ensure the history of Indians is not overlooked or 'airbrushed' in school textbooks currently undergoing revision.
Involved since their arrival as indentured laborers in 1860, Indians have contributed significantly to South Africa's development across various spheres. The South African Hindu Dharma Sabha (SAHDS), led by President Ram Maharaj, insists on a curriculum that reflects these contributions adequately, advocating for an increase in content discussing Indian history by at least double in all educational grades.
The SAHDS argues that their historical experiences, including severe discrimination and immense contributions during the anti-apartheid movement, are vital for promoting interracial understanding and social cohesion within the nation. The organization also seeks recognition for key Indian figures and philanthropists who played crucial roles in establishing essential institutions, emphasizing that comprehensive historical representation fosters unity and diversity in South Africa.
