Candid Talks Set the Stage for Crucial Trump-Xi Beijing Summit
U.S. and Chinese officials held candid discussions on trade policies ahead of the upcoming Trump-Xi meeting in Beijing. Concerns over restrictive trade measures and supply chain dependencies were addressed. Both sides aim to enhance cooperation and manage differences, promising a productive summit between the two nations.
The top economic officials from the U.S. and China engaged in earnest talks on Thursday, preceding the scheduled meeting between President Donald Trump and President Xi Jinping in May. These discussions, described as 'candid' by both the U.S. Treasury and Chinese state media, addressed grievances over trade policies.
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent highlighted China's recent stringent extraterritorial regulations, which he claimed have destabilized global supply chains. His remarks came during a conversation with Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng, noted for their frankness and depth. These new regulations are viewed as a response to efforts by the U.S. to minimize reliance on Chinese supply chains.
Despite the introduction of restrictive trade measures, both the U.S. and China expressed a desire for collaborative progress at the upcoming Trump-Xi summit. Chinese state broadcaster CCTV confirmed constructive exchanges aimed at resolving trade issues and expanding cooperation. This summit follows last year's trade truce and reflects ongoing geopolitical negotiations.
