In a significant legislative development, the Karnataka Legislative Assembly officially disqualified Congress MLA Vinay Kulkarni on Saturday. The decision follows his conviction for conspiracy in the 2016 murder case of BJP leader Yogeshgouda Goudar.
Kulkarni, currently serving life imprisonment, was convicted by the Bengaluru court in the politically charged murder, in which Goudar was killed by assailants in Dharwad. This has led to his immediate disqualification from Assembly membership, as per Article 191 of the Constitution and the Representation of the People Act, 1951.
The disqualification also triggers a vacancy in the 224-member Karnataka Assembly, with bypolls already underway to address other vacant seats. Kulkarni, once a prominent figure, now faces a six-year disqualification period post-release, pending any legal reprieve he might seek.
