National Campaign Begins with Pledge for Safer Healthcare Facilities
The week-long observance was inaugurated with a nationwide pledge ceremony led by Union Health Secretary Smt. Punya Salila Srivastava, centered on the theme "Fire Safety in Health Facilities."
Highlighting this year's broader vision—"Safe Schools, Safe Hospitals, and a Fire-Safety Aware Society: Together for Fire Prevention"—the Health Secretary emphasized that safety is a shared responsibility requiring coordinated action from institutions, governments, and citizens alike.
She stressed the importance of:
-
Regular fire safety audits and infrastructure assessments
-
Identification and rectification of safety gaps
-
Mandatory training and sensitization of healthcare workers
-
Continuous monitoring through platforms like the IHIP portal
Notably, over 50,000 participants have already completed fire safety training via the iGOT platform, reflecting growing institutional engagement.
NDMA Pushes for Systemic Preparedness and Nationwide Capacity Building
Reinforcing the urgency of preparedness, Shri Krishna S. Vatsa, Member and Head of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), called for a proactive, systems-based approach to fire safety.

Fire safety audits across healthcare facilities
-
Mock drills and evacuation exercises
-
Demonstrations of fire detection and suppression systems

Awareness campaigns in medical colleges and institutions
States and Union Territories have also been directed to conduct rigorous fire and electrical safety audits in both public and private healthcare facilities.
Additionally, educational initiatives such as:
-
Poster-making competitions
-
Quiz contests

Hands-on equipment training
are being encouraged to foster a culture of safety awareness among healthcare professionals and students.
Towards a Safer, Resilient Healthcare Ecosystem
The Ministry has called for active participation from all stakeholders, urging institutions to adopt the newly released guidelines in both letter and spirit. The overarching goal is to build a safe, responsive, and resilient healthcare ecosystem capable of protecting patients, caregivers, and medical staff.
The newly launched guidelines are accessible online, providing a roadmap for hospitals nationwide to upgrade their safety protocols in line with modern risk management practices.
As India continues to strengthen its healthcare infrastructure, the Fire Safety Week 2026 campaign signals a decisive shift—from reactive responses to proactive prevention and preparedness.
