The Supreme Court has issued a landmark verdict directing the Jammu and Kashmir administration to appoint candidates from the now-defunct Rehbar-e-Taleem (ReT) scheme as teachers within eight weeks. This decision comes with a crucial proviso: appointees must meet essential teaching qualifications, including clearing the Teachers Eligibility Test (TET), within a stipulated time frame.
The verdict was rendered by a bench comprising Justices J K Maheshwari and Atul S Chandurkar, which upheld a previous decision regarding the closure of the ReT scheme but protected the rights of candidates already placed in select panels. The scheme, initiated in 2000 to address teacher shortages, was officially closed in 2018, sparking litigation from candidates yet to be formally appointed.
The judgment underscores the importance of balancing employment rights with the constitutional mandate for quality education. Candidates who fail to meet the qualifications within the prescribed period risk the automatic termination of their appointments. The court has ordered the wide dissemination of the judgment to ensure all candidates are informed of their obligations.
