Tensions Rise: Philippines Accuses China of Illegal Research in South China Sea
The Philippine Coast Guard has accused China of illegal marine scientific research near Reed Bank, within Manila's exclusive economic zone in the South China Sea. This accusation comes amidst rising tensions regarding sovereignty rights, as the Chinese research operations were deemed unauthorized and in violation of international law.
The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) has raised allegations against China, claiming unauthorized marine scientific research near the oil-rich Reed Bank within Manila's exclusive economic zone in the South China Sea, according to an official statement released this Thursday.
PCG Commandant Admiral Ronnie Gil Gavan vowed to challenge any illegal activities undermining Philippine sovereignty. The accusation follows an incident on May 6, when a PCG aircraft detected the Chinese research vessel Xiang Yang Hong 33 close to Iroquois Reef. This discovery indicated continuous unauthorized research, supported by the deployment of a service boat towards the reef, alongside sightings of a Chinese Coast Guard vessel and 13 maritime militia ships in the area.
China faces criticism for conducting marine operations without authority, seen as infringing on Philippine sovereign rights and the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. Conversely, Beijing's embassy in Manila defends the ships' missions as routine activities within their jurisdiction, complying with international law.
