Gangs have gained control over Port-au-Prince since President Moïse's assassination, leading to deteriorating security near the airport. International forces aim to stabilize the situation.
Haiti is in turmoil as a wave of gang violence grips the nation, forcing hundreds to flee. The chaos reached its peak this week, scattering people along the road to Haiti's main airport.
Monique Verdieux, 56, fled her neighborhood after witnessing armed gangs torch homes. Disconnected from her family, she now sleeps on the street, deeming a return home unsafe.
Since President Jovenal Moïse's assassination in July 2021, gangs have taken control of over 90% of Port-au-Prince. Security is severely strained, with incidents of looting, kidnapping, and assaults spreading to rural areas. The UN and international community are mobilizing forces to stabilize the area.
