A timely intervention by the police in Maharashtra's Beed district thwarted a family's attempt to marry off a 17-year-old girl, officers confirmed on Tuesday. The incident unfolded in Moha, Parli Vaijnath tehsil, and led to legal action against the groom and family members from both sides.
The ceremony was slated for May 10, scheduled to take place at a school, but was scuppered thanks to an alert from a gram panchayat official. The girl, intended for marriage to a 28-year-old Beed resident, was found to be underage according to legal standards.
Swift response by the authorities, acting on prior information, saw the wedding halted moments before completion. Subsequently, charges under the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act were leveled against the groom, his parents, and the bride's parents, sending a strong message against the illegal practice.
