Activist Anjali Bharadwaj has called for an immediate halt to the next phase of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, citing serious concerns about transparency and voter suppression. Speaking at a recent discussion on electoral integrity, Bharadwaj highlighted issues arising from the recent West Bengal elections, urging the Supreme Court to intervene before future phases of the exercise proceed.
Despite strong opposition from civil society groups and claims of large-scale deletions affecting minorities, the Election Commission of India intends to begin phase three of the SIR on May 30. Bharadwaj and other speakers raised questions about the decision-making process behind the revisions, pointing out a lack of official documentation and answers to queries.
Former chief election commissioners and academics highlighted the potential erosion of democratic institutions and questioned the validity of elections conducted under such contentious circumstances. Activist Harsh Mander suggested that the SIR exercise is being misused as a tool for backdoor citizenship investigations, emphasizing the need for clarity and accountability in the electoral process.
