The government has taken a significant step to address judicial capacity by issuing an ordinance to expand the strength of the Supreme Court from 34 to 38 judges, including the Chief Justice of India. This move seeks to amend the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Act, 1956, marking a substantial shift in judicial proceedings.
The ordinance, notified by the law ministry on Saturday, aims to fill the two current vacancies and prepare for future demands on the court's time. Once transformed into a law, this expansion is expected to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of India’s apex judicial body.
To formalize the change, a bill reflecting the ordinance will be introduced in the upcoming Monsoon Session of Parliament. This legislative action follows the Union Cabinet's approval of the draft bill on May 5, indicating a committed effort to uphold judicial integrity and expedite case resolutions.
