Indian Railways has approved the Arakkonam-Chengalpattu Doubling Project in Tamil Nadu at an estimated cost of ₹993 crore, marking a major step towards strengthening rail infrastructure and improving suburban and freight connectivity in the Chennai region.

The 68-kilometre project, undertaken by Southern Railway, forms part of the crucial Chennai suburban circular rail network connecting Chennai Beach, Tambaram, Chengalpattu and Arakkonam.

The project is expected to significantly enhance operational efficiency, reduce congestion, improve punctuality, and support growing passenger and freight demand across one of the busiest rail corridors in South India.

Ashwini Vaishnaw Highlights Strategic Importance of Project

Union Minister for Railways Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw said the Arakkonam-Chengalpattu Doubling Project would play a vital role in decongesting the heavily utilised Chennai suburban rail network.

According to the Minister, the additional rail line will improve the overall efficiency of train operations while increasing the frequency and reliability of suburban services.

"The Arakkonam-Chengalpattu Doubling Project will play a significant role in easing congestion on the busy Chennai suburban rail network while improving punctuality and operational efficiency," Vaishnaw said.

He added that the project would benefit both passenger and freight transportation by strengthening movement across the corridor.

Major Boost for Passenger and Freight Traffic

The existing single-line section is currently operating at high capacity utilisation levels, with rail traffic expected to rise further in the coming years due to rapid urbanisation, industrial growth, and increasing commuter demand.

Officials said the doubling project is necessary to accommodate future traffic growth and ensure smoother train operations.

The project is expected to:

  • Reduce train detention and waiting times;

  • Improve punctuality of suburban and long-distance trains;

  • Increase operational efficiency;

  • Enhance freight movement capacity, and

  • Allow higher frequency of suburban rail services.

The corridor plays an important role in transporting several critical commodities, including:

  • Cement;

  • Automobiles;

  • Food grains;

  • Iron and steel, and

  • Industrial goods.

Railway officials believe the infrastructure upgrade will help improve logistics efficiency and reduce transportation bottlenecks in the region.

Strategic Corridor Connecting Key Industrial Hubs

The Arakkonam-Chengalpattu route passes through several major industrial and economic centres in Tamil Nadu, making it strategically important for regional development and industrial supply chains.

Key industrial hubs along the corridor include:

  • Mahindra World City;

  • Sriperumbudur;

  • Oragadam;

  • Irungattukottai, and

  • Major automobile and manufacturing clusters.

The region is home to several automobile manufacturers, electronics companies, cement industries, and industrial parks that rely heavily on efficient rail connectivity for freight transportation and workforce mobility.

The doubling project is expected to further strengthen connectivity between industrial centres and ports while supporting faster cargo movement.

Parandur Airport Project Adds to Corridor Importance

The proposed Parandur Airport project near Kancheepuram has further increased the strategic significance of the Arakkonam-Chengalpattu corridor.

The upcoming greenfield airport project is expected to generate substantial passenger and cargo traffic in the future, increasing the demand for efficient rail connectivity in the surrounding region.

Rail infrastructure experts say the doubling project will help prepare the corridor for future transportation requirements associated with airport development, industrial expansion, and urban growth.

The Chennai suburban railway system remains one of India's busiest commuter rail networks, serving millions of passengers annually.

The Arakkonam-Chengalpattu section forms an important component of the circular suburban rail network linking key residential, commercial, and industrial areas across the Chennai metropolitan region.
