A 70-year-old woman and her 40-year-old daughter were found dead in their Nagpur house, with police awaiting medical reports to determine the cause of their deaths.

A 70-year-old woman and her 40-year-old daughter were found dead in their house in Nagpur city, with police awaiting medical reports to determine the exact cause, an official said on Monday.

The bodies of Lajwanti Tekchand Chawla (70) and her daughter Yogita Tekchand Chawla (40) were found inside their locked house on Sunday afternoon.

The incident came to light around 1.30 pm when their neighbour noticed a foul smell emanating from the house of the Chawla family in Hiwri Nagar area and alerted the police, an official said.

A forensic team examined the scene.

Residents said the mother and daughter had been living in poverty for several years. Members of the Sikh community were helping them with daily meals and monthly financial assistance, they said.

Neighbours also said the house lacked basic facilities, including an electric fan, despite the scorching heat.

''The exact cause of death is not yet known. We are investigating all possible angles and awaiting the post-mortem report before reaching any conclusion,'' a Nandanvan Police Station official said.

Police have registered an accidental death case and launched a detailed investigation.
