Supreme Court Upholds Trump Administration's Speech Policy for Immigration Judges
The U.S. Supreme Court ruled in favor of President Trump's administration regarding a speech policy dispute involving federal immigration judges. The decision allows the policy, enforcing judges to seek prior approval before speaking publicly due to their official capacity, to remain as the court returns the case for further examination.
The Supreme Court sided with the Trump administration on Tuesday, supporting a restrictive speech policy for federal immigration judges. The policy mandates that judges obtain prior approval before making public statements in their official capacity.
The court's brief ruling does not address the policy's legality but allows the association representing immigration judges to continue challenging the policy in lower courts. Trump's administration had previously appealed a 4th Circuit ruling, which sought further investigation into the independence of federal agencies tasked with overseeing worker complaints.
Alex Abdo from the Knight First Amendment Institute criticized the ruling, arguing it perpetuates unconstitutional censorship. Despite Biden's review, the policy remains unchanged, now sending the dispute back to the 4th Circuit for additional proceedings.
