UCLA Faces DOJ Lawsuit for Alleged Antisemitism
The U.S. Department of Justice has filed a lawsuit against UCLA, accusing it of allowing antisemitism against Jewish and Israeli students, in violation of Title VI. UCLA has refuted the claims, stating efforts to combat antisemitism. The lawsuit follows criticism of antisemitism in U.S. universities by the Trump administration.
The U.S. Department of Justice has initiated legal action against the University of California Los Angeles, accusing the institution of fostering a hostile educational environment for Jewish and Israeli students. The lawsuit, filed by the Justice Department's Civil Rights Division, alleges that UCLA violated Title VI, a federal law prohibiting discrimination in federally assisted programs, by demonstrating deliberate indifference to pervasive on-campus antisemitism.
Significant to the lawsuit is an encampment that appeared on the UCLA campus in April 2024, which the Justice Department describes as illegal, claiming it led to attacks on Jewish students. Bill Essayli, First Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Central District of California, emphasized the responsibility of universities to ensure safe and inclusive environments. However, UCLA Chancellor Julio Frenk disputed these allegations, highlighting steps taken by the university to address antisemitism, such as hiring a vice chancellor for safety and reorganizing its civil rights office.
Additional measures last year included the suspension of student groups involved in protests perceived as antisemitic. The lawsuit aligns with broader efforts by the Justice Department under the Trump administration to address antisemitism in academic settings, actions that have been spotlighted following tensions related to the Israel-Gaza conflict.
