Congress's Jairam Ramesh has raised concerns over tribal rights in the Great Nicobar project, writing to Minister Jual Oram. Ramesh emphasizes that legal provisions under the Forest Rights Act, 2006, must be truly and visibly enforced.
Ramesh's letter criticizes Oram for appearing to justify the overlooking of tribal community rights. He pointed out inconsistencies in claims by Andaman authorities, emphasizing that significant tribal lands would be impacted despite contrary assertions. Ramesh recalled that the Ministry of Tribal Affairs had relied on unverified facts from local administration regarding de-notification proposals. He urged Oram to take a firm stance in ongoing legal proceedings and ensure adherence to the Forest Rights Act.
