Mamata Banerjee, former chief minister of West Bengal, is at the center of a legal controversy following an FIR filed against her for allegedly offending religious sentiments, according to police statements on Wednesday.
The complaint, lodged by lawyer Rinki Chattopadhyay Singh at the Siliguri Cyber Crime Police Station, accuses Banerjee of making provocative comments during a religious event and a protest, which she claims insulted millions of Sanatani Hindus both in India and abroad.
Singh alleges that the police initially resisted filing the complaint, only proceeding after persistent follow-ups. The FIR accuses Banerjee of making incendiary remarks, suggesting that a specific community had the potential to overpower others swiftly, which Singh believes are not becoming of someone in a position of power.
The FIR cites several sections of the penal code, including charges pertaining to intimidation and defamation. A senior officer in the Siliguri Police Commissionerate confirmed that a probe is underway to assess the claims laid out in the complaint.
"The complaint has been officially registered, and we are meticulously examining all aspects identified in the FIR," an official disclosed, affirming the ongoing investigation.
