Ghanaians Seek Safety Amid South Africa's Anti-Immigrant Turmoil
Ghanaian nationals are voluntarily repatriating from South Africa amid safety concerns following anti-immigrant protests. The protests have sparked violence against migrants, prompting 800 people to express a desire to leave. Ghana's High Commissioner emphasizes cooperation between the nations to address undocumented immigration and maintain diplomatic relations.
Early Wednesday, Ghanaian nationals queued at Johannesburg's OR Tambo International Airport to board flights back to Ghana. The voluntary repatriation follows heightened safety concerns due to anti-immigrant protests in South Africa.
The protests focus on undocumented migrants, whom campaigners blame for crime and unemployment, leading to violence against sub-Saharan nationals. Out of those returning, only ten are legally in the country, sparking immigration law concerns.
The repatriation effort, coordinated by Ghanaian and South African authorities, aims to ease tensions. Ghana's High Commissioner stresses cooperation between the countries to ensure proper immigration compliance while maintaining diplomatic ties.
