Canada has announced its decision to acquire early warning radar planes constructed by Sweden's Saab and complemented by Canada's Bombardier, bypassing two U.S. options. Mark Carney disclosed on Wednesday that Canada will negotiate for Saab's Airborne Early Warning & Control Aircraft, based on Bombardier’s Global 6500, to enhance domestic manufacturing.

Despite incorporating 20% American components, Carney highlighted the importance of diversifying military expenses, historically dominated by U.S. suppliers. The strategic radar aircraft are intended to fortify Canada's Arctic defense, offering situational awareness over vast territories. This move reflects Canada's commitment to less dependence on the United States for military procurement, a policy strengthened by past U.S.-Canada tensions under former President Donald Trump.
