The Supreme Court of India on Wednesday endorsed the Election Commission's authority to carry out Special Intensive Revisions (SIR) of electoral rolls. This ruling backs Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar's statement that the commission is dedicated to serving voters, as highlighted on National Voters Day.
The apex court emphasized that maintaining a flawless electoral roll is crucial to the democratic process, ensuring not just transparent polling mechanisms but also integrity and accuracy. The verdict marks a significant win for the Election Commission amidst criticism from various opposition parties, who accused it of bias towards the ruling BJP.
Despite these allegations, the decision affirms the constitutional duty of the Election Commission to ensure free and fair elections, as detailed by a bench led by Chief Justice of India, Surya Kant.
