South Africa is poised for a political showdown as its parliament convenes to initiate impeachment proceedings against President Cyril Ramaphosa over the notorious 'Farmgate' scandal. This follows a ruling by the Constitutional Court that reignited the proceedings, casting a shadow over Ramaphosa's leadership.

The Democratic Alliance (DA), the second-largest party in South Africa's coalition government, remains critical of the president despite sharing power with his African National Congress (ANC). "The good thing is that parliament seems to be moving forward," stated DA parliamentary leader George Michalakis, voicing concerns about potential ANC influence over the investigation.

With only 9 out of 31 committee seats held by the ANC, the impeachment process could face complications. Ramaphosa has filed a legal challenge to contest an independent panel's findings and may seek a court order to halt proceedings if parliament persists. Nonetheless, the ANC, controlling 40% of the National Assembly, pledges full support for Ramaphosa amid this political turmoil.
