Tirumala Temple Sees Record Pilgrim Turnout for Tonsuring Ritual

In May, over 12 lakh devotees performed the hair-offering ritual at Tirumala temple, significantly increasing from previous years. The ritual contributes substantially to the temple's earnings. The temple has improved facilities to manage the large influx of pilgrims, ensuring a seamless experience for all participants.

The Tirumala temple witnessed a remarkable surge in pilgrims participating in the ritual tonsuring ceremony this May, with over 12 lakh devotees offering their hair. This is an increase from May 2024 and May 2023 numbers, highlighting the growing popularity and dedication among the devotees.

The temple has implemented various measures to efficiently handle the influx, including the operation of multiple tonsuring centres and extending working hours for barbers. These efforts, along with enhanced sanitation and seating provisions, have ensured a comfortable experience for the pilgrims, who view this as a spiritual fulfillment.

As the temple sells the collected hair, known as "Black Gold," it generates significant income, reportedly around Rs 150 crore annually. The month-long increase can be attributed to the summer holidays and a consecutive run of weekends, drawing many to fulfill their vows.

Approximately 1,152 barbers, including 269 women, are employed to facilitate the tonsuring process. Many have increased their service capacity to cater to the growing demand. The temple administration continues to prioritize improving the devotee experience while maintaining traditional rituals.
