Mark Carney, Canada's prime minister, is advocating for a stronger partnership with the United States as President Trump considers the renewal of the trade agreement between the nations. Carney, speaking at the Economic Club of New York, highlighted the need for a 'true partnership' to address global challenges.

Amidst the upcoming review of the USMCA in July, Carney underscored Canada's efforts to broaden its trade network beyond the US, aiming to double non-US exports in the next decade. He expressed concern over the impact of American tariffs on investments, particularly in sectors like aluminum and steel.

Carney also noted the critical role Canada plays in supplying American energy needs and advocated for the benefits of maintaining an integrated market for sectors like automobiles. The Canadian government remains committed to finding ways to strengthen ties and counterbalance the current US administration's trade approaches.

Upcoming discussions in Washington, led by Canada's US trade minister Dominic LeBlanc, will address the possibility of annual reviews of the trade agreement and clarify the uncertainties surrounding future trade relations.
