The Supreme Court has voiced its concern about a growing pattern where individuals involved in matrimonial and commercial conflicts resort to unfounded and provocative criminal cases as a means to settle personal vendettas. The court urged the judicial system to scrutinize such cases diligently to prevent the wrongful use of legal resources.

This issue was highlighted by a bench consisting of justices BV Nagarathna and Ujjal Bhuyan, who quashed a criminal complaint that involved rape allegations against a father and his brother. Justice Nagarathna emphasized the misuse of the judicial process in matrimonial disputes, often used to intimidate or unsettle the opposing party and their family.

In the specific case under review, the bench found the rape allegations to be baseless and highlighted the importance of preserving one's reputation, which can be tarnished by false legal claims. The court acknowledged that while false accusations are increasing, genuine cases of violence against women and children require serious attention and prompt judicial action.

The judges stressed that courts need to effectively differentiate between legitimate grievances and those that exploit the legal system for ulterior motives. The case involved a decade-long legal battle after a couple separated, with allegations arising only after a change in custodial arrangements, adding to suspicions about the veracity of the claims.
