A soldier from Guyana sustained injuries after an exchange of gunfire with armed men across the Venezuelan border. The incident was reported on the Cuyuni River, in a region plagued by disputes over territorial claims, according to local officials.
The Guyana Defence Force confirmed that its patrol vessel endured gunfire late Friday. These confrontations are not isolated, but part of an ongoing tense situation marked by past violent incidents, including one that injured eight soldiers.
Earlier this month, both nations presented their case at the International Court of Justice in The Hague, engaging in legal proceedings concerning a 62,000-square-mile disputed territory. Venezuela's acting President Delcy Rodríguez has advocated for political dialogue rather than judicial resolutions to address the long-standing territorial disagreement, claiming historical ties to the region.
Venezuela maintains that Essequibo belongs to it, as the area was within Venezuelan colonial boundaries and points to the 1966 Geneva agreement which reportedly challenges the 1899 border established by international arbitrators.
