More than 45 people have perished in a devastating explosion at a facility reportedly storing explosives for mining operations in northeastern Myanmar. According to rescue officials and media reports, the blast injured around 70 others and occurred at midday in Kaungtup village, Namhkam township, near the Chinese border.
The site is controlled by the Ta'ang National Liberation Army, whose spokesperson mentioned that the explosives were intended for mining and stone quarrying uses. The group announced that an investigation is currently underway to determine the explosion's cause. Local relief efforts are ongoing to provide medical and resettlement assistance to the affected residents.
Reports from Myanmar outlets varied in the death toll, while Chinese broadcaster CCTV noted substantial damage to nearby residential properties. The TNLA had previously entered a ceasefire with national military forces, but the relationship remains strained amidst ongoing regional instability.
