Czech Court Considers Extradition of Controversial German Activist
A Czech court has ruled that German far-right activist Marla-Svenja Liebich, who was convicted of various offenses could be extradited to Germany. Liebich's legal gender change has sparked debate about her prison placement. Her appeal was quashed, and she was apprehended by Czech police near the German border.
A Czech court announced on Monday that German far-right activist Marla-Svenja Liebich, who has convictions for multiple offenses, may be extradited to Germany. The decision follows a debate regarding her legal gender change and subsequent prison assignment, as Liebich could face imprisonment in a women’s facility.
Liebich was sentenced in 2023 to 18 months in jail for incitement to hatred, defamation, and other charges, under her former legal name, Sven. Germany's Halle regional court upheld the conviction in August 2024, and a subsequent appeal was rejected in May 2025.
Germany's Self-Determination Act, effective November 2024, allowed Liebich to change her gender legally. With her new name and identity, prison regulations necessitated a transfer to Chemnitz women’s prison. The move has sparked criticism, pointing to potential exploitation of the law, as indicated by German Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt. After failing to report to the prison in August 2025, Liebich was caught by Czech police.
