India Takes a Firm Stand on Sanctioned Ships

India's ship safety certifier, the Indian Register of Shipping (IRClass), has cancelled certification for over 200 ships involved in evading international trade sanctions since 2023. This action reflects India's stance on Western sanctions against Russian and Iranian vessels. This measure may affect ships' insurance and port access.

India Takes a Firm Stand on Sanctioned Ships

The Indian Register of Shipping (IRClass) is cracking down on vessels evading international trade sanctions, revoking certifications for over 200 tankers since 2023, the agency’s head informed Reuters.

Mumbai-based IRClass, a leading global ship certifier, delisted 235 ships, mostly oil tankers, making it difficult for them to secure insurance and access ports. This shift aligns with India's policy regarding Western sanctions on nations like Russia and Iran.

Despite differing tactics with China, which ignored U.S. sanctions on Iranian oil, India refused Russia's offers of LNG subject to U.S. sanctions, highlighting its divergence from fellow oil consumers. However, de-certification adds to a fleet of uncertified vessels, heightening risks of oil spills and environmental hazards.
