China-Taiwan Maritime Tensions Escalate Over Patrols
China and Taiwan are at odds over Chinese coast guard patrols near Taiwan's waters. China claims its actions are legal, asserting sovereignty, while Taiwan deems the patrols as harassment and rejects China's territorial claims. The tensions follow maritime talks between Japan and the Philippines.
China and Taiwan engaged in a heated exchange on Wednesday over the legality of China's coast guard patrols east of Taiwan. The controversial patrols have drawn anger from Taiwan, which accuses China of harassing nearby merchant vessels.
China, which asserts it has territorial jurisdiction, initiated the patrols following an announcement by Japan and the Philippines to begin maritime boundary talks involving waters off Taiwan. Taiwan, opposing Beijing's claims, insists only its people can decide on sovereignty matters.
Taiwan's Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung condemned China's actions, likening them to an expansionist move under the guise of law enforcement. Meanwhile, China maintains that strengthening patrols is a rightful act to safeguard national sovereignty and maritime rights.
