Cape Town Marathon Becomes Africa’s First World Marathon Major

Organizers estimate the event could contribute around R800 million to the economy through tourism, hospitality, investment and related activities.

Africa has reached a landmark moment in global road running after the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon was officially confirmed as the continent's first Abbott World Marathon Major. The achievement follows the successful hosting of the 2026 race and places Cape Town among the most prestigious marathon destinations in the world. With this recognition, Cape Town joins an elite group of cities that includes Tokyo, Boston, London, Sydney, Berlin, Chicago and New York. The milestone brings one of marathon running's highest honours to a continent that has produced generations of world-class distance runners.

Historic Recognition for African Running

African athletes have dominated long-distance running for decades, consistently producing some of the fastest marathon runners in the world. Despite this remarkable record, the continent had never hosted an Abbott World Marathon Major until now. The journey began in 2021 when the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon was selected as a candidate race. From 2022 onward, the event underwent detailed annual evaluations that measured operational standards, race organization, athlete experience and international competitiveness. A key step came in 2024 when the marathon attracted a record 20,000 entries and delivered course records in both elite races. South African star Glenrose Xaba also set a national marathon record of 2:22:22, strengthening the event's bid for major status.

Challenges Strengthened the Bid

The road to recognition was not without obstacles. Organizers were forced to cancel the 2025 race, a decision that initially raised concerns about the marathon's future ambitions. The move ultimately demonstrated the event's commitment to safety and responsible management. Rather than weakening the campaign, it reinforced confidence in the race's governance and prompted Abbott World Marathon Majors to extend the evaluation process.

Everything depended on the successful delivery of the 2026 edition. The race attracted worldwide attention, particularly with marathon legend Eliud Kipchoge competing in his first official marathon on African soil. The event met all assessment requirements and secured final approval as the eighth member of the Abbott World Marathon Majors series.

Economic and Sporting Impact

The recognition is expected to generate significant benefits for South Africa and the wider continent. Organizers estimate the event could contribute around R800 million to the economy through tourism, hospitality, investment and related activities.

The marathon is also set to create new opportunities for African runners. Organizers have pledged that two-thirds of race entries will be reserved for African participants, giving local athletes greater access to one of the world's most sought-after marathon events.

The first official Abbott World Marathon Major in Africa will take place in Cape Town on 23 May 2027. For South Africa, already home to the iconic Comrades Marathon, the achievement further strengthens its position as one of the world's leading destinations for distance running and major sporting events.
