Diplomatic Ties Asserted: Somaliland Stands with Taiwan Amid Pressure
Somaliland, maintaining autonomy since 1991, reaffirms its diplomatic ties with Taiwan, resisting pressures from China and Somalia. Both regions, lacking broad international recognition, emphasize their democratic values and continue collaboration. The new representative office marks a significant step in these nations' resolve to choose strategic partnerships independently.
Somaliland's top diplomat in Taiwan declared on Friday that despite pressures from Beijing and Mogadishu, the new office for Somaliland in Taiwan marks a commitment to the regions' friendship.
Since breaking away from Somalia in 1991, Somaliland has been operating independently, though it hasn't gained widespread recognition. In 2020, Somaliland and Taiwan, each diplomatically isolated, set up representative offices in each other's capitals.
The representative, Mahmoud Adam Jama Galaal, emphasized Somaliland’s resolve against external pressure, asserting its right to form its own diplomatic relationships. The recent recognition of Somaliland by Israel, despite severe condemnation from Somalia, reinforces its trajectory towards international legitimacy.
