Corruption Quagmire: Zapatero's Jewellery Probe and Political Fallout

Former Spanish Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero is under investigation by a High Court judge over allegations of corruption. The scandal deepened with the discovery of jewellery worth €1.3 million during a search of his office, with its origins undocumented, intensifying scrutiny on the Socialist Party leader.

Investigating Judge José Luis Calama noted the lack of fiscal traceability for the items could suggest tax evasion or smuggling violations. The absence of customs paperwork further fueled concerns, as Zapatero's lawyer has yet to address the situation publicly.

Despite pressure from a series of scandals, Zapatero plans to testify in mid-June about the alleged influence-peddling network, which purportedly enriched from lobbying efforts for entities like Plus Ultra airline, recipient of a 2021 state bailout.
