British Man Jailed for Online Suicide Encouragement

A British man was sentenced to six years in prison for actively encouraging the suicide of a vulnerable young man in the United States. Dylan Phelan, 21, urged Travis Dyer, also 21, to take his own life during a live video call on the Discord platform.

The incident, which included Phelan and two other U.S.-based individuals, resulted in Dyer’s death by suicide using a shotgun. Prosecutors described the case as deeply disturbing and a calculated exploitation of someone struggling with mental health issues.

Phelan also pled guilty to charges related to indecent images and extreme pornography. This case underscores increasing efforts by the U.K. to combat online harms, including measures targeting harmful behavior towards children and young people.
