India and Thailand have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening defence cooperation and enhancing strategic collaboration during the 10th Thailand-India Defence Dialogue held in Bangkok on June 16, 2026. The high-level meeting provided an opportunity for both countries to review the full spectrum of their defence partnership and exchange views on regional and global security developments.

The dialogue was co-chaired by Thailand's Deputy Permanent Secretary for Defence Admiral Nuttapol Diewvanich and Joint Secretary in India's Ministry of Defence, Shri Satyajit Mohanty. Senior officials from both sides participated in discussions that focused on defence cooperation, regional security, defence industry partnerships, and future areas of collaboration.

The meeting reflected the growing importance of India-Thailand relations at a time when security dynamics in the Indo-Pacific region continue to evolve. It also built upon the momentum generated after the two countries elevated their bilateral relationship to a formal Strategic Partnership in 2025.

Focus on Indo-Pacific Stability and Security Cooperation

A major part of the discussions centred on the changing security environment in the Indo-Pacific, a region that has become increasingly significant in global strategic and economic affairs. Both sides exchanged perspectives on recent regional developments and reaffirmed their shared interest in maintaining peace, stability, and prosperity across the Indo-Pacific. The delegations recognised that greater cooperation among like-minded countries is essential for addressing emerging security challenges and ensuring a stable regional order.

The dialogue highlighted the importance of sustained engagement between India and Thailand, given their geographical proximity, maritime links, and longstanding cultural connections. Officials noted that closer cooperation can contribute not only to bilateral interests but also to wider regional stability.

The discussions reflected a common understanding that dialogue and collaboration remain important tools for managing security concerns and promoting confidence-building measures in the region. As both countries continue to expand their strategic engagement, defence cooperation is increasingly becoming a key pillar of their broader relationship.

Expanding Military Engagements and Defence Collaboration

The delegations reviewed the progress achieved since the previous edition of the dialogue and examined various ongoing defence cooperation initiatives. Military-to-military engagements featured prominently in the discussions, with both sides assessing the progress of training exchanges, professional interactions, capacity-building programmes, and joint activities conducted over the past year. These initiatives have played an important role in strengthening mutual understanding between the armed forces of the two countries.

Maritime cooperation also received significant attention during the meeting. Given their shared interest in secure sea lanes and regional maritime stability, India and Thailand discussed ways to further enhance cooperation in maritime security and related areas.

The dialogue provided an opportunity to evaluate existing mechanisms while identifying new avenues for practical collaboration. Both countries acknowledged the value of regular interactions between defence establishments in building trust and improving operational understanding.

The review of ongoing programmes demonstrated the steady expansion of bilateral defence engagement, reflecting a relationship that has evolved beyond traditional diplomatic exchanges into a more comprehensive strategic partnership.

Defence Industry Partnership Gains Momentum

Defence industry cooperation emerged as another important area of discussion during the dialogue. Both sides reviewed ongoing collaboration between their defence sectors and explored opportunities to deepen engagement in manufacturing, research, innovation, and capability development. The conversations focused on identifying areas where industries from both countries could work together to create mutually beneficial partnerships.

As nations increasingly seek to strengthen indigenous defence capabilities and diversify supply chains, collaboration in defence production and technology development is becoming an important component of bilateral relations. India and Thailand expressed interest in expanding cooperation that supports innovation while contributing to the growth of their respective defence ecosystems.

The delegations also exchanged views on cooperation within regional and multilateral defence frameworks, particularly mechanisms led by the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). These platforms provide opportunities for countries to address common security concerns, strengthen dialogue, and promote collaborative approaches to regional challenges.

Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to working together through such forums while continuing to enhance practical bilateral cooperation. The emphasis remained on finding constructive ways to address shared security interests through consultation, coordination, and sustained engagement.
