Buhari warns Nigerians to heed flood warning

The flood warning was issued on Wednesday by the NIHSA in a press briefing in Abuja for imminent increased flooding in next month.

Taking serious note to the flood warning given by the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA), President, Muhammad Buhari last evening tweeted, "I want to appeal to Nigerians to please heed early warning flooding alerts by relevant government agencies, intended to safeguard lives and property. These alerts are well-meaning and for the good of everybody."

He further tweeted, "My heartfelt sympathy goes to the families of all who lost their lives in recent flooding incidents, as well as those who lost the property. I have directed to immediately provide relief assistance to all affected communities and persons across the country. The flood warning was given by the NIHSA for imminent increased flooding in coming September. This was announced on Wednesday during a press briefing in Abuja.

The NIHSA has urged the state governments to pull down structures built on flood plains. The Abubakar Tafwa Balewa University has also issued a notice for students to vacate the campus after the flood disaster killed four students on the campus. A pedestrian bridge which collapsed on Monday midnight killed the students and left injured many. Recently, a Director at the FCT High Court in Abuja got missing after a flood submerged his vehicle. This incident occurred last week at a bridge along Galadimawa roundabout in Abuja. This is the second flood within the area.
