The Dutch suspect in the abduction and killing of an 11-year-old Romanian schoolgirl on Friday was hit by a truck in the Netherlands on Monday and died, the head of the Romanian police said. "Our Amsterdam-based liaison officer told us the suspect in the killing of Adriana Mihaela Fieraru threw himself in front of a truck. We've yet to find out whether he committed suicide or it's an accident," Liviu Vasilescu told local television.

Vasilescu said police had been reviewing a "huge volume of footage" from street cams in the village of Gura Sutii, some 70 km (44 miles) north-west of Bucharest, before the Dutch man became the suspect. Romanian prosecutors said earlier they had launched a criminal inquiry against the man for three crimes: murder, abduction and sexual assault. Fieraru was found strangled with a textile cord on Sunday.

Fieraru did not return home from school on Friday, which prompted her brother to alert village police. Aided by drones and a helicopter, police found her corpse after 48 hours on a nearby field, covered by a plastic bag. Street cams footage broadcast by local television stations showed a car, capturing something pink inside, "probably the girl's trousers," prosecutors said.

"Anyway, our criminal investigation continues," Vasilescu added. "We've yet to find out why the Dutch man chose this village as his destination for this deed in Romania."
