Doctors have expressed alarm over people claiming to have lost belly fat with hairdryers. A weight loss website, Brightside is encouraging a weight loss technique which involves pointing a scolding hot hairdryer at your stomach to 'get rid of unnecessary liquid in the body'.

The website claims that hot compresses which are typically used to treat aches and pains can influence the size of particular parts of your body when combined with heat from a hairdryer. "To increase the effect and keep your compress hot for longer, you can use a hairdryer," it says. The website also shows a video titled 12 Tips on How to Lose Weight Without Strict Diets urging viewers to grab a hairdryer instead of torturing yourself at the gym as a means of encouraging the body to sweat and lose water weight. And this has got 1.1 million views since it got published in June 2018.

A plastic surgeon, Christopher Inglefield called this ridiculous. Not only does it cause serious skin damage, but Dr Inglefield also said it will most definitely not help you lose weight. "This will not have a satisfactory outcome and carries the risk of burning the abdomen. To make matters worse, this could, in turn, cause blistering of the skin which can cause infection, and in extreme cases, this could lead to necrosis, which is the death of skin cells."
