Efforts are underway to remediate Delhi's Bhalswa landfill by September. This directive comes from Union Housing and Urban Affairs Minister Manohar Lal, aiming to tackle legacy waste and process daily fresh waste efficiently.
During an on-site inspection, the minister emphasised the need to prevent the creation of new legacy waste. The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs highlighted that since biomining operations started in July of last year, about 15,000 metric tonnes of waste are processed daily. These efforts have substantially decreased the landfill's waste volume from 73 lakh metric tonnes in June 2022 to approximately 23.17 lakh metric tonnes by late May.
Thus far, remediation efforts have reclaimed nearly 43 acres of the 70-acre site. Authorities aim to use the regained land for community and public welfare initiatives once the remediation process concludes. The minister's inspections form part of the Dumpsite Remediation and Action Plan (DRAP) under the Swachh Bharat Mission-Urban 2.0 scheme.
