High vigilance alert set by Himachal CM in borders

Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh Jai Ram Thakur today said officials should be vigilant in areas bordering Punjab and Haryana.

Replying to a question asked by Congress MLA Naina Devi in the state assembly here, under call attention motion, Thakur said, "Himachal Pradesh is a peaceful state and criminals, including murderers, rapists, robbers and drug peddlers, may want to take refuge here after committing crimes in neighboring states."

In response to the July 14 encounter by Punjab police in Bilaspur district, the Himachal government is mulling over increasing police strength in border areas, the CM said.

Thakur said after the encounter Punjab police detailed their Himachal counterpart on the matter and said a car snatcher had been killed.

The CM said three closed-circuit television cameras have been installed and one constable along with three home guard jawans, equipped with AK 47s, have been deployed at Tauba Check Post in Bilaspur district near Punjab border.

He said all vehicles entering the state are not checked, though random police inspections are often conducted. Checks are also conducted based on the special information.
