Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar's Fine Gael party welcomed a commitment by the country's main opposition party to extend their expiring government cooperation deal until 2020.

"We welcome the commitment from Fianna Fail to extend the confidence and supply arrangement which will allow us to continue taking Ireland forward together," Fine Gael's negotiating team said in a statement.

"This commitment further strengthens Ireland's hand in negotiating a successful outcome to Brexit, and securing all that we have achieved to date."
