Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy leveled serious accusations against China on Sunday, alleging that Beijing is aiding Russia in undermining an upcoming peace conference on the Ukraine war, set to be organized by Switzerland.
Addressing Asia's premier security gathering, Zelenskyy asserted that China is exerting pressure on other nations to abstain from the conference. He refrained from naming specific countries but lamented China's influence as an 'instrument' for Russian leader Vladimir Putin. China, which claims a neutral stance on the conflict, has seen its trade with Russia flourish despite Western sanctions, complicating its position.
The Swiss anticipated China's participation in the mid-June conference, but Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning indicated otherwise, citing a mismatch between the conference's arrangements and China's expectations.
Zelenskyy urged global defense officials to join the summit and stressed that greater participation could compel Russia to engage in genuine peace efforts.
