Beijing has leveled grave accusations against two of its own citizens, asserting espionage for Britain in a fresh surge of tension between the two nations.
The allegations come amid growing clashes over Hong Kong's freedoms, previously guaranteed for 50 years post-1997 handover.
On Monday, China's Ministry of State Security, the primary intelligence service, revealed on social media that it had uncovered a significant espionage operation. The suspects, identified by their surnames Wang and Zhou, were allegedly recruited by MI6 when Wang studied in Britain in 2015, later joined by his wife. They reportedly passed sensitive state secrets to British intelligence while enjoying financial and other incentives.
Despite detailed allegations, specific information on the secrets leaked remains undisclosed. Both suspects' whereabouts are currently unknown as the investigation continues.
The UK has not yet responded to these serious claims. These developments follow last month's indictment in Britain over alleged espionage for Hong Kong by two men and a puzzling death tied to the case.
