Kalpana Soren Trails in Gandey Bypoll

In a dramatic turn of events, Kalpana Soren, wife of jailed former Jharkhand chief minister Hemant Soren, is trailing by 2,242 votes in the Gandey Assembly bypoll. Her nearest competitor is BJP's Dileep Kumar Verma, according to the Election Commission's latest updates.

The seat has been up for grabs since the resignation of JMM MLA Sarfaraz Ahmad. With 2.17 lakh voters casting their ballots out of 3.16 lakh, the bypolls were held on May 20, and the counting is expected to conclude after 24 rounds.

Kalpana Soren has been an influential figure in the INDIA bloc rallies and had launched her political journey at the 51st foundation day of JMM on March 4. Her campaign has been up against allegations of a conspiracy ever since the Hemant Soren coalition came into power in 2019. Hemant Soren himself is currently facing legal battles connected to a money laundering case and consequent to his resignation as Chief Minister.
