Five years after a crushing defeat by the younger Jagan Mohan Reddy, TDP leader Chandrababu Naidu is poised for a stunning comeback. As of Tuesday, his party is leading in 130 out of the 175 seats in the Andhra Pradesh assembly polls, bolstered by alliances with BJP and Janasena Party (JNP).
Naidu's resurgence comes just months after his arrest on corruption charges. Despite this setback, the TDP is also performing well in the Lok Sabha elections, leading in 16 out of 25 seats. Born in Naravaripalli in 1950, Naidu's political career began with student politics at Sri Venkateswara University in Tirupati. He later joined the Congress party before switching to TDP, founded by his father-in-law, the legendary actor N T Rama Rao.
First serving as Andhra Pradesh's Chief Minister in 1995, Naidu held the position for nine continuous years during the state's united period, and then again after the bifurcation of Telangana. He played a crucial role in the development of modern Hyderabad, transforming it into a tech hub. Despite losing power in 2019, Naidu's determination remains unshaken, as he prepares for another electoral battle in 2024 after being released from jail.
