In a notable shift, the city of Indore in Madhya Pradesh witnessed a record number of 2.18 lakh voters opting for the NOTA (None of the Above) option during the ongoing Lok Sabha election counts on Tuesday.

This accounted for 14.01% of the total votes, reflecting a significant rise in voter dissatisfaction with the available candidates. Former Chief Election Commissioner O P Rawat indicated that while NOTA holds symbolic importance, its legal impact on election results would require over 50% of votes.

Comparatively, in the 2019 parliamentary elections, Bihar's Gopalganj recorded a previous high of 51,660 NOTA votes. As voter discontent grows, the pressure mounts on Parliament and the Election Commission to reconsider the legal efficacy of NOTA.
