In a grim announcement, Malawi's President Lazarus Chakwera has revealed that Vice President Saulos Chilima and nine others died in a plane crash. The military aircraft, which went missing on a flight from Lilongwe to Mzuzu, was located in the northern mountains after an exhaustive day-long search.

Chakwera disclosed that despite efforts by hundreds of soldiers, police officers, and forest rangers who combed through the Viphya Mountains' vast forest plantation, no survivors were found. The flight's tragic end was attributed to adverse weather conditions at Mzuzu's airport, leading air traffic controllers to advise a return to Lilongwe before losing contact with the plane.

This incident marks a significant loss for Malawi, with Vice President Chilima having been a prominent political figure, serving his second term and previously facing dropped corruption charges. The Dornier 228-type twin propeller plane he was traveling in had been part of the Malawian armed forces since 1988.
