Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Anil Parab on Monday demanded legislation to reserve 50 per cent of homes in new residential projects in Mumbai for Marathi-speaking residents, stating their numbers are dwindling in the metropolis.

At a press conference, Parab, a multiple-time Member of Legislative Council (MLC) currently contesting the June 26 Legislative Council elections from the Mumbai graduates constituency, said Marathi-speaking citizens are being displaced from the financial capital due to unaffordable housing.

''We need a 50 per cent reservation for Marathi speakers in new residential projects,'' said the former state minister, emphasizing the urgency of passing this legislation during the upcoming monsoon session starting June 27.

Parab reiterated his previous demand for affordable housing, suggesting smaller units of up to 500 square feet be constructed to cater to Marathi-speaking buyers.
