Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune declared on Thursday that he will run for a second presidential term in the election set for September 7.

The 78-year-old leader, who was first elected in December 2019, has garnered the backing of key political parties and civil society organizations. Tebboune stated, "At the request of many parties, organizations, and youth, I announce my candidacy for a second term, as the constitution allows."

While opposition candidates such as Youcef Aouchiche of the FFS, Abdel-Ali Hassani Cherif of the MSP, and Louisa Hanoune of the Workers' Party are also in the race, they are considered fragmented and weak. Algeria, an OPEC member, is a significant gas supplier to Europe and plans to double its gas output to 200 billion cubic meters per year within the next five months.
